Late last night, I finally got back home after a long year of being DC. The first 8 months had been brutal, working almost 24/7 and ending in being in a big shot out. I was pretty badly wounded and spent the last 4 months in the hospital. My leg was shot multiple times and then got infected, leading to the eventual amputation. It still hurt and I got discouraged from not being able to do anything. But it was getting better everyday, even if I still walked with a limp. Ever since I left her house, Rowan had been on my mind. I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do since I had been gone for longer than I say, but I went to her apartment and knocked. Half of my hopes she wasn't home, half of me was dying to see her. Ok, all of me was dying to see her.

I had lost the love of my life, half of me figured he was gone forever, the other half longed everyday for his return. Then I found out I was pregnant with his baby and I had to keep up with work, but then the best thing in my life came into my world. I was cleaning up the house while the baby slept when I heard the knock on the door. "I'm coming." i called, figuring it was one of the mothers from the single mother group I had joined, picking us up for a stroll to the park. I grabbed the diaper bag of the counter and pulled open the door. "Give me one sec...." I froze when I realized I wasn't talking to Marsha. I wasn't even talking to a woman. I took a step back. "Lucas...?" i whispered. |

I bit my lip, just wanting to hold her but I couldn't. "I know it's been a long time and it isn't fair of my to just 'stop by.' So if you want me to leave I will." I promised, holding a nearby chair for stability. I begged silently to myself that that wouldn't happen.

I bit my lip and shook my head. "No. Of course not. Come in, let's sit." I said softly. I quickly texted Marsha to say that an emergency had come up and I wasn't going to make it.

I moved to the other side of the chair I was holding onto and sat down. For a moment I just took everything in; being back here with her. Something seemed different but I couldn't tell when. I opened my mouth to say something but then all of a sudden I heard a cry from the other room. It sounded like a baby. She must be babysitting for a friend or something for her charity. "I'll wait." I said to her.

I bit my lip. "I'll be right back." I said softly. I didn't know how I was going to go about telling Lucas that the baby was his. I smiled when I saw her in her crib. "Hey, what's wrong? Mommy's here. No need to cry." I picked her up and changed her diaper. "There all better. Fresh and beautiful. Now I want you to meet someone." I said. I carried her out to the other room and sat down across from Lucas. "Lucas.. this is Iris." I said, gently bouncing her on my lap and smiled down at her.

I was confused for another moment until all the pieces came together. Iris looked like her, the toys scattered around... Rowan had a baby. I felt hurt- I know I said she could see other people, but I didn't think she'd get over me that quickly. I wondered who the father was... I guess id meet him soon. "How old is she?" I asked softly.

"Lucas, wait.." I got up with Iris in my arms. "I never saw anyone else. I told you you had my heart and I wasn't lying. I found out I was pregnant three weeks after you left..." I said softly.

A million emotions filled me- I didn't know what to think. For probably what felt like forever, I didn't say anything. Finally I took a shaky breath. "Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, my eyes falling on iris.

"How could I tell you Lucas?" I asked. We weren't aloud to communicate and I had no idea when you would get back. I went to the gym everyday for a month when you were expected back but you were never there so I figured you had found a better job in DC." I said softly.
