"We should be alone." I said. I headed down the whole and stopped at a closed door. I knocked. "Mayor? It's Rowan. I was hoping to talk to you about something." I said. "Come on in Rowan." He called back. I stepped in and Lucas followed. "Mayor I need to know the truth about something... Are you Lucas's father?" I asked.

I saw the look on his face. He tried to mask it but we had both seen it and he know. He sighed and put a hand on my shoulder but I took a step back, not wanting him to touch me. "Please, just let me explain."

He checked the time and bit his lip. "Can we please talk about it later? I don't really have time right now, and I need to talk to my wife- she and the girls don't know." He said softly. I didn't respond, knowing it was the only way to keep my cool for Rowan.

I bit my lip. I continued walking, deciding we could leave early and wait at my place. When we got outside I turned to him. "I guess I just didn't realize you were so aggressive." I said softly.

I got back to my place and started a pot of coffee. I stood staring at the coffee for a long time before turning towards Lucas. "I didn't just babysit the mayors youngest daughter." I told him. "When my mom died, my dad left. For six months he was gone. The mayor let me stay with him and his family. He took care of me while my father was gone. I know that he's a good person so I'm sorry if I'm having a little bit of trouble believing some of your accusations." I said.

I frowned. "I'm sorry, I didn't know that." I said softly. "I'll try to keep an open mind, ok?" It would be hard but I would really try.

"Thank you." I said softly. A few minutes later there was a knock on my door. I opened the door to the mayor and let him in. "Can I get you some coffee?" I asked but started pouring a glass before he could answer.

He looked at me and I got nervous again, looking down. I didn't expect to feel this way. He took a long drink of coffee then started talking. "Your mother and I were young when we were together- we lived in the same apartment you grew up in while I took college classes. When I figured out she was pregnant, I was scared but I had no plan on leaving. But one of my professors saw real talent in me- said I had a future in politics if I studied hard and went to graduate school. But I knew I couldn't pay for that and take care of a family. So I left." He said softly, hanging his head. "I regret what I did, I do. It was stupid and I was young, only thinking about myself. When I decided to run for mayor, I told my campaign manager about my past. He said he was going to talk to your mom and make an agreement so she wouldn't sue. But he did more than that and I've always felt so guilty for that." He said. I was silent.
