I nodded and took a deep breath. After a minute, I took out my phone and did something I never thought I would do- call my dad. At first he didn't answer but then I called again. "Lucas? What's going on?" He asked. "My mom had a stroke and I'm at the hospital and I don't know what to do." I said quietly, trying to hold back my emotions. He was quiet for a second. "I'll be right there." He said. He hung up and I just sat there. About 10 minutes later he was here, dressed in a nice suit. It was obvious he was coming from a meeting. "What happened? How is she?" He asked.

I kissed Lucas's cheek and stood up. "I'm going to go get something from the vending machine." I said, wanting to give the two some alone time. I nodded at Mayor Fisher and quietly stepped out.

"The stroke affected a big part of her brain." I said softly. "They said that there's a surgery that could maybe work, but it's risky and expensive. What should I do?" I asked. He thought for a minute. "I think she should do the surgery. Knowing your mother... She would do anything to see Iris grow up, and see you married someday." He said. I nodded slowly. "You're right. Money shouldn't matter." When the doctor came in, I let her know. she nodded. "I'll start getting her ready right away. It's a 12 hour surgery, so feel free to wait in our waiting room." She said. I slowly got up and we went to sit down. I found Rowan in the hall. "She's getting the surgery." I said softly.

The mayor sat next to Rowan. "It's going to be a long night. You should go back to Iris, Rowan. Lucas and I will wait here." He said.

I nodded. "Okay.. Call me as soon as you hear anything okay... otherwise, I'll be back over first thing in the morning." I said softly. I got up and gave him a tight hug, kissing his forehead. "She's strong." I whispered softly.

I nodded and gave her a gentle kiss before she left. Then I just sat,waiting for news. Mayor fisher fell asleep next to me; I knew he meant well, and I was just grateful he was here. Knowing I couldn't never sleep, I just sighed and stared at nothing. About 8 hours later, a doctor came up to us. I jumped up- it must have gone better than expected if he was out early. But instead, he took off his cap and his eyes filled with remorse. "I'm so sorry. She stroked out again on the table, and we couldn't save her." He said. My dad put his hand on my shoulder and I shrugged it off, biting my lip hard so I wouldn't cry. After doing a few routine things, the Mayor drove me home. I wasn't really thinking. He walked me up to the apartment, but I didn't really say anything about it. When I opened the door, Rowan was on the couch. But I knew I couldn't say anything without crying, so I just walked into my room and turned on the shower. If I was in there, then no one could see or hear me cry.

I watched Lucas walk silently into his room and looked to the mayor who silently shook his head. I bit my lip feeling awful. The mayor left and I quietly went into the other room. "Lucas?" I asked softly. "I don't want you to be by yourself.."

I had just gotten out of the shower and changed into sweats and a tshirt. "I'm fine...." I whispered softly. I did not want to cry in front of her. Biting my lip hard, I sat on the bed and looked down.
