Lucas
Tonight, Rowan and I had both cleared our schedules so we could have some much needed family time. Mostly that consisted of playing with Iris and feeding Iris and basically anything to do with Iris. It sounds boring, but I loved spending time with the two of them. The transition of moving in had been weird, but we were all getting used to it. As I held Iris, my phone started ringing. I let it go to voice mail, but a minute later it rang again. Frowning, I picked it up. A worker at my mom's place was on the other line. "Lucas Shea?" She asked. "Yes? What's going on?" I asked. "Your mother... Had a stroke earlier. She's being rushed to the hospital right now." She said. My heart raced and I stood up. "I'll be right there." I said before hanging up. I looked at Rowan and Iris, unable to form words for a second. "I have to go." I said. Quickly I got my coat and shoes but couldn't find the car keys. I huffed and shakily looked around for a second then gave up and ran out. I would figure it out.

"Lucas? What's going on?" I worried but he didn't respond. "Lucas!?" He ran out without saying anything. I grabbed Iris who had started to cry, not knowing what was going on. I carried her down to my dad then ran after Lucas. "Where are you going?" I huffed, catching up to him just before he got into a taxi.

I jumped in the cab with her and quickly told him directions. "My moms...in the hospital...." I said breathlessly. I took a moment to contain myself. "She had a stroke." I said softly. "She's probably so scared... I need to be there now."

"Oh Lucas... Well I'm coming with you." I looked around inside the moving cab. "Well I guess I have to, but you shouldn't have to do this alone." I said.

I didn't respond, my mind on other things. Anxiously, I looked out the window until we got to the hospital. Once we got there, I quickly paid the driver and rushed inside. The receptionist was able to help me find my moms room so we went quickly there. I found her laying in a bed, unconscious, hooked to machines. I let out a breath and sat next to her, holding her hand. "I'm here mom... It will be ok." I said softly, even though I knew she couldn't hear.

I stood behind Lucas and gently rubbed his shoulders. "This is a good hospital Lucas. She's going to be okay." I said softly.

I took a deep breath. "Yes. You're right." I said softly mostly to myself. The doctor came in with a chart. "Are you Lucas Shae?" She asked. I nodded and she took a deep breath before sitting down next to me. "You're mother suffered from a major stroke." She said, pulling out some pictures. "This is a healthy brain, and... This is your moms brain." She explained, showing me the pictures. I didn't respond but she eventually continued. "A big part of her brain isn't responding. The only thing keeping her alive is the machines." She said softly. I just blinked, trying to process it all.

She gently put her hand on my knee. "You need to understand that it is extremely unlikely she'll ever wake up." She said softly. "I would reccommend letting her go." She said. I just bit my lip hard and looked back to her.

I just told there, looking from the nurse to Lucas's mother and back to Lucas. "Could we have a moment?" I asked. The nurse nodded and stepped out.

I heard the nurse leave the room, but didn't look over. I knew if I did I would see Rowan, and if I saw Rowan I would start crying.

I gently wrapped my arms around him from the back and rested my head on his shoulder, gently kissing his cheek. I stood up and went out to the doctor. "Is there absolutely nothing that could be done?" I asked. He sighed. "There's an extreme surgery that we could do that might work, but there's no guarantee and it costs so much money. More money than Mr. Shae can afford. I shook my head. I can take care of the costs. Please just offer the surgery to him." I said softly. The doctor nodded slowly.

The doctor came back in and sat down next to me. "There is a surgery we could attempt. It's experimental and there's a chance it won't work. But there's also a chance it will." She said softly. I nodded. "I... I have to think about it." I said quietly. I didn't know if she would want to go through all that pain, or if she could. Plus there was the cost. I bit my lip and looked back to her.

The doctor nodded. "I'll give you some time." He said and quietly left. I sat down newt to him and put my hand on Lucas's knee. "Lucas don't worry about the cost. I'll take care of it." I said.

I nodded. "That's not the only problem." I said softly. "I'm trying to think of what my mom would want. And I don't know if she would want to go through all the pain and risk of a big surgery."
