Campbell The sun shone down on me as I walked home from my office, but that wasn't what I was thinking about. There was so much going on in my mind. Last night, I discovered something big- I was pregnant. I was going to tell Mason the second he got home from work, but I was exhausted and went to bed early. Then, I was going to tell him this morning, but we got into a fight over something stupid I don't even remember and left each other in a huff. Now I was stressed and frustrated and didn't know what I was going to do. All of a sudden, my train of thought was interrupted by the sound of screeching tires. I looked and saw a car spin towards me. It hit me before I could move. I felt the impact and my head hitting the floor before everything went black. What I think was a few minutes later, my eyes opened. Where was I? Confused, I realized I was in an ambulance. I started to cry; I just wanted Mason here.
Police officer We got work that there was an accident involving 2 cars and a few pedestrians. Mason and I were training some rookies today, who looked wide eyed and excited about their first job. "Ok, half of you are going with me to the scene of the accident, where we'll do crowd control and whatever else they need us to do. The other half will go with Mason to the hospital, where you will get information about the victims and contact the family." I knew Mason hated boring work like that, but someone had to teach them. I left with my half of the guys.

Mason We got to the hospital a few minutes after the ambulance arrived. I held up my badge and a nurse led us to the victims. "Is anyone alert enough to talk?" I asked the nurse. "One of the drivers only has a few scratches. Pretty lucky. I'll take you to him first." She said. "The woman that was walking is the worst of them all. She's stable but slips in and out of consciousness." She explained. I was only half listening as we walked and I got my things together and mumbled some stuff to the rookies. But as we passed some of the victims, something caught my eye. My head shot up and I stopped dead in my tracks. "Campbell?" I questioned, my voice quivering. I spun around to the nurse. "No one wanted to inform me that one of the victims was my wife?" I asked, my voice rising. "I'm sorry officer, we couldn't get a name out of her." I shook my head and pushed past everyone and into the room. "Campbell? Campbell sweetie? Please be okay!" I begged as I rushed to her side.

Campbell I heard a familiar voice and opened my eyes to see Mason. "Mason? What happened?" I asked, confused. My head killed. Well, actually everything hurt. I groaned and closed my eyes again.

Mason I let out a big gasp of air when I heard her voice. "Shh.." I whispered. "You were in an accident? The doctors are going to take care of you." I whispered, silently wiping tears out of my eyes before anyone could see.

Campbell I opened my eyes again and saw a doctor was there. "Your husband is right, so you can relax. We're just going to take you in for an x-ray to see if you have any broken bones." She said gently started to move my bed. "No. Stop." I said firmly. She stopped, confused. "I can't. I'm pregnant." I said. At first, she didn't respond. Finally she said something. "How far along are you?" She asked. Exhausted, I waited a second to respond. "I don't know... I just figured out." I started to cry again as I heard her call someone for an ultrasound. This is not how I wanted Mason to figure out, and now I didn't even know if the baby was still alive.

Mason I stood there silently. I bit my lip and swallowed hard. "Campbell.." I breathed. "Why didnt you tell me?" I asked then shook my head. "No, don't answer that. I don't care. I just care about keeping you and whoever is growing inside you safe." I said, carefully wiping her eyes. I turned to the doctor. "You are going to do everything possible for my wife." I said firmly. It wasn't really a question.

Campbell "Yes, sir. The ultrasound machine is on its way." She replied, sounding a little scared of him. A minute or two later, she got the equipment and put it to my stomach. She was quiet for a while and stared at the screen. "The baby was too small and didn't survive the impact. i'm so sorry." She said. At this point, I didn't even know how to respond. "But you have internal bleeding and we need to get you in surgery right away to fix it." I bit my lip hard. I couldn't process all this at once, and I had never had surgery before.

Mason I swallowed back tears trying not to react. I squeezed Campbell's hand. "It's okay sweetie. I'm right here. You're going to be okay. Be brave." I whispered, knowing that as crushed as I felt, she needed me more right now.

Campbell They started asking my questions, but most of them I didn't know the answer to. Like my family medical history and stuff. Meanwhile, they started prepping me for surgery, obviously rushing. I couldn't really think about anything except my miscarriage. I can't believe this was happening. "Ok, we're going to bring you to the operating room now." Someone said. I didn't want Mason to leave. Tears filling my eyes, I held his hand tighter. "I'm sorry, sweetie, but we have to go now." The doctor said. I finally let go of his hand and they rolled me away. What if I never got to say goodbye? Thoughts like this raced through my head until I fell asleep from the anesthesia.

Mason I sighed heavily and fell into one of the hospital chairs. I sat there for a while with my head in my hands until I heard a voice. "Uhh.. Captain?" I looked up to see one of the rookies standing in front of me. I took a deep breath. "Right, the statements.." I started to weakly push out of the chair when he held out a stack of papers. "We got them.. just uh, look over them when you have a chance and let us know if we missed or forgot anything." I slouched back into the chair, relieved I didnt have to do any real work. "Thanks Scott. I'll let you know." I mumbled. He nodded and walked away. I looked around hoping to see Campbell back but I knew it wouldn't be that fast. I decided to look over the statements to distract myself from thinking about other things.

Doctor After a few hours, we finished the operation and brought the woman to a recovery room. I walked around until I found the young police officer she was married to in a room alone. "Um officer? We just finished operating on your wife. We put her in a recovery room and she should be waking up any minute now. I'd like to go over the procedure we did when she wakes up and is stable." I told him.

Mason I nodded and slowly got up from the chair to follow him to the other room. "Is she going to be okay?" I asked.

Doctor "We think she has a concussion, but she'll be ok." Before I opened the door, I stopped to look at him. "We were going to tell you both together, but I think it would be better to warn you ahead of time so you can be there for her." I paused. "During the surgery, we did all we could to stop the bleeding, but we ended up having to do a hysterectomy... which means she will never be able to carry another child. We're so sorry." I told him.

Mason "That was the best you could do?" I snapped. I took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I'm just glad she's okay. Can I please see her now?" I asked.

Campbell I heard the door opened and looked to see Mason and a man walk in. I was really tired, and sore and out of it. "What happened?" I asked. A nurse came over to check my vitals and gave me a soft, sad smile. "You were in an accident, and had surgery. But you're doing better now." She said. I just grimaced from the noise and closed my eyes again.
