Early in the morning, right after the stables opened, I went in and caught Missy then started brushing her down. No matter how long she may spend in a field it was extremely rare for her to get even a speck of her dirt on her. That was only one of the many reasons why I loved her.
After brushing her off, picking out her hooves, and putting on her rhythm beads, I led her out of the barn. I buckled my helmet and knotted the end of her purple lead rope to one side of her halter and clipped it to the other side. I grabbed Missy's neck and a handful of her mane then jumped up and swung my leg over her back. Her ears swiveled back to listen to me.
I patted her neck and gave her a nudge to walk on. "Good girl." I gathered up the makeshift reins and relaxed to the jingle of the beads around her neck. It was rare I ever rode without them; they calmed us both down.
The sun was coming up fast. The horizon in front of us on the trail was beautiful. As we came through a huge clearing, I slid my hands up Missy's neck and leaned forward slightly. I kicked her sides and she took off into her fast gallop. Grinning, I remembered a clearing just like this one I would always gallop Missy in. It made us both feel so free from reality and what the real world was like. And that feeling was no different today.
Soon I pulled back on the reins and slowed her to a walk again. The clearing still went on for about a mile or two but I wanted to let her calm down. I rubbed her neck and butt and looked around to find another rider on their horse not to far behind us.
